Bowmoor Youth & Optimist Camp 2016

Bowmoor Optimists Sep 15

Bowmoor Sailing Club have arranged for the annual Youth & Oppy Camp to be held this year from

Tuesday evening 31st May to Friday 3rd June 2016 (half term week for most schools).

The Bowmoor Optimist Open Meeting is a separate event and this will be held on Saturday 4th June

Seeking to build on the success of previous camps, we are planning to repeat the format that worked really

well in 2015. We hope to offer a Camp that will cater for all levels of ability from those who have recently

completed initial training to those currently competing at open events around the country. To that end, we

have arranged for John Burford to coach the more experienced sailors for all 3-days to ensure that they can

continue with their development. Mark Lyttle has once again kindly agreed to provide coordination of all of

the coaches to ensure a coherent and enjoyable programme with Rachael Jenkins and John Banbrook on

hand to ensure the overall ‘smooth running’ of camp.

Following-on from last year, and to keep costs down, we plan not to provide communal catering again this

year with the exception of Thursday night when we plan to hold a Camp BBQ. All other meals will need to

be self-catered.

As usual, we anticipate that the event will be popular with both our members and non-members. All

bookings will be via the Bowmoor website and our web-collect system. This will give parents the

opportunity to pay on-line and by card if they choose. Places will be allocated on a first come basis. Please

do not leave it to the last minute to book – it provides the organisers with a real problem when it comes to

booking sufficient coaches and ordering ‘hoodies’. Also given the strength in numbers within the Fleet,

there is a real chance that you may miss out. Further details below.

Training prior to Camp

Camp is not intended for complete beginners and we ask that all sailors have completed their RYA Stage 2

or IOCA Level 2 equivalent; if you are in any doubt please contact the Bowmoor Optimist Flotilla Leader,

Rachael Jenkins at jenkinsrachael@yahoo.com

It is also strongly recommended that those sailors that have previously completed their initial training, but

have not sailed during the winter months, would benefit from the Bowmoor Optimist Flotilla Spring

coaching programme. Full details can be found via the Club website, or from the Bowmoor Optimist Flotilla

Club Optibats

For beginners, there are a limited number of club Optibats, but preference will go to members who are

new starters and attend the training programme prior to camp on a first come first served basis. During

camp each child must have sole use of an Optibat as it is impracticable to share. If your child requires an

Optibat, please ensure that you check the relevant box when you make your booking.

Youth Sailors

For 2016 we are adapting the planned Youth activity at camp to support the regular club sailors.

As in previous years there will be a Topper group, this group will focus on boat handling and racing skills,

with the intention that sailors in this group will be comfortably able to join in with club racing after camp if

they choose to do so. There are a limited number of club Toppers available to hire and preference for these

will be go to club members on a first come first served basis. If your child requires a Topper, please ensure

that you check the relevant box when you make your booking

New for 2016 !!!! For those children who enjoy spending time on the water but who have decided that at

the moment racing coaching isn’t quite for them we intend to run a more gentle option, this will enable

these children to develop and enjoy their sailing and water activity skills. Please speak with Rachael if you

think that your child would enjoy this option before booking on via the club website.

Also making a debut this year, the Bowmoor Byte Fleet will be running their own self help coaching group

on the water and joining with the Optimist camp sailors activity off the water, to book onto this group you

need to own your own Byte and be confident to at least RYA level 2, please book directly with Emily

Watson by May 9th 2016.

Sibling Sailors

Following the success of last year’s Pirate group we would like to offer this again to younger siblings (aged 6

or older) of sailors booked onto camp. The Pirate group will be aimed at those children who are not quite

old enough to sail an Oppy independently but are ready to build skills and confidence towards sailing

through a range of water and shore based activities. To book a place for a Pirate, please complete the on-

line entry which you can find underneath the Oppy Camp entry form on the Bowmoor website.

the smooth running of Camp and to make sure that we pass the Club back to the members in the same high

standard of cleanliness that we will find it. The booking form will ask for your preference of duties; we will

do our best to accommodate everyone’s preferences, but please acknowledge that we will not be able to
