Bowmoor Youth and Oppy Camp 2018

Bowmoor Sailing Club annual Youth & Oppy Camp will be held this year from Tuesday evening 29th May to Friday 1st June 2018.

Due to exceptional demand, Camp is now full and we regret that we are unable to accept any more bookings

Camp will cater for children with a wide range of sailing ability from those who have recently completed initial RYA level 2 training to those competing at open events around the country.  We have arranged experienced and inspiring coaches for all the groups and plan to run a structured sailing week, the emphasis being on, improving skills, having fun, enjoying the sport of sailing and spending time with sailing friends both new and old.

As last year, we will run multiple coaching groups, these will include, Optimists, Optibats, Bytes, Teras, Toppers and a Pirate group for younger non sailing siblings. We are also considering a Feva option.  There are Bowmoor Club Teras, Toppers, Optibats, and Fevas available for hire,  please indicate on your booking form if you wish to hire a boat, these will be allocated on a first come first served basis. This includes people who are hiring on an annual basis.

On Thursday night we are planning a Camp BBQ.  All other meals will need to be self-catered.  The Bowmoor galley will be open, offering lunch and snacks throughout the day. I hear on the grapevine that the menu is yet to be confirmed but there is a rumour that chips will probably be available!!

For Optibat sailing beginners, preference will go to members who are new starters and who have attended the Bowmoor training programme prior to camp. During camp each child must have sole use of a boat as it is impracticable to share.

There will be a Pirate group for younger siblings (aged 6 or older) of sailors booked onto camp. The Pirate group will be aimed at those children who are not quite old enough / ready,  to sail an Oppy independently but who are ready to build skills and confidence towards sailing through participating in a range of water and shore based activities. To book a place for Pirates, please complete the separate Pirate on-line entry form.

This year we are fortunate to have Ian Walker  MBE, double olympic medalist and currently RYA’s director of racing visiting camp, hopefully this will be on Wednesday afternoon.  He will deliver a presentation to the children and would like to spend some time talking with our parents and sailors! How’s that for cool!

The camp fee includes all coaching, prizes, contribution to fuel, administrative costs, refuse collection, BBQ on Thursday night for sailors  (parents can buy tickets at camp) and a hoody for each sailor.

Camping on site is also included in the overall cost and we invite people to arrive, register and set up on Tuesday evening ready for a 0900 coach’s brief on Wednesday morning.

A parent/guardian must remain on site at all times and will be required to carry out duties allocated by rota during the duration of camp this helps to keep costs down and contributes to the smooth running of the week.

For parents camp provides a great opportunity to relax, put your feet up and watch the sailing, we also recognise that it can be ‘tough’ sitting still and that you can only drink so much tea in a week, so in addition this year we hope to offer parent paddle boarding, fitness training if sufficient interest (bookable at a small extra cost), and if the weather is kind we will organise adhoc parent racing – bring your sailing kit!

Booking for camp is now open, all bookings need to be made via  Bowmoor web-collect.  This system is slightly painful to use but please bear with the process, it really helps our admin.

Please please do not leave it to the last minute to book, last years camp sold out quickly, there is a real chance that this will happen again this year and that your children may miss out!  Why not take advantage of our early bird prices and book today!  If we are not sold out, prices will increase by £10 per sailor on 8th April. If you can pay by bank transfer or direct debit then that will help to keep our costs down as we have to pay paypal 1.4% which we cannot now charge to our customers.

Immediately following camp we will run the Bowmoor Optimist Open meeting and Yoo Youth Regatta, held on the Saturday (2nd June), this event will be suitable for all camp sailors and visitors, entry will be on the day.

We are having great fun planning camp and really looking forward to seeing you,

John Banbrook and Rachael Jenkins
