BOWMOOR OPPY CAMP 2014

BOWMOOR OPPY CAMP 2014

Bowmoor Sailing Club have arranged for the annual Oppy Camp to be held this year from Thursday evening 29th May to Sunday Friday 1st Jun 2014 (last weekend of half term week for most schools).

Seeking to build on the success of previous camps, we have evolved the event for 2014 to focus on what we feel has worked really effectively in recent years. We hope to offer a Camp that will cater for all levels of ability from those who have recently completed initial training to those currently competing at open events around the country. To that end, we have arranged for John Burford to coach the more experienced sailors for all 3-days to ensure that they can continue with their development. Mark Lyttle has once again kindly agreed to provide coordination of all of the coaches to ensure a coherent and enjoyable programme and John Banbrook will ensure the overall ‘smooth running’ of camp.

Breaking from recent tradition and to bring costs down, we plan not to provide communal catering this year with the exception of Saturday night when we plan to hold a Camp BBQ. All other meals will need to be self-catered.

As usual, we anticipate that the event will be popular with both our members and non-members. This year all bookings will be via the Bowmoor website new web-collect system. This will give parents the opportunity to pay on-line and by card if they choose. Places will be allocated on a first come basis. Further details below.
Training prior to Camp
Camp is not intended for complete beginners and we ask that all sailors have completed their RYA Level 1 or IOCA Level 1 equivalent; if you are in any doubt please contact the Bowmoor Optimist Flotilla Leader, John Banbrook at john.banbrook@gmail.com .
It is also strongly recommended that those sailors that have previously completed their initial training, but have not sailed during the winter months, would benefit from the Bowmoor Optimist Flotilla Spring coaching programme. Full details can be found via the Club website at:
http://www.bowmoor.co.uk/wp-2013/
or from the Bowmoor Optimist Flotilla Leader.
The remaining training dates as follows:-

26th April – 3rd May – 17th May

Club Optibats
For beginners, there are a limited number of club Optibats, but preference will go to members who are new starters and attend the training programme prior to camp on a first come first served basis. During camp each child must have sole use of an Optibat as it is impracticable to share. If your child requires an Optibat, please ensure that you check the relevant box when you make your booking.

Sibling Sailors
Following the success of last year’s Pirate group we would like to offer this again to younger siblings (aged 6 or older) of Oppy sailors booked into camp. The Pirate group will be aimed at those children who are not quite old enough to sail an Oppy independently but are ready to build skills and confidence towards sailing through a range of water and shore based activities. Please indicate on your reservation email if you have a child interested in joining the Pirate group.

Oppy Camp Pricing
With regard to Oppy camp, indicative prices are as follows:-

Bowmoor Members

1 child £70
2 children £125
3 children £175
Pirate Group £55

Non-Members

1 child £85
2 children £150
3 children £205
Pirate Group £65

The cost includes all coaching, prizes, contribution to fuel, administrative costs, BBQ on Saturday night and a hoody for each sailor. Camping on site is free and we invite people to arrive, register and set up on Thursday evening reading for a 0900 coach’s brief on Friday morning.

Please note: a parent/guardian must remain on site at all times and will be required to carry out duties during the duration of camp in order to help everything run smoothly.
Duties may involve either sailing related or clubhouse related activities and they are necessary to ensure the smooth running of Camp and to make sure that we pass the Club back to the members in the same high standard of cleanliness that we will find it. The booking form will ask for your preference of duties; we will do our best to accommodate everyone’s preferences, but please acknowledge that we will not be able to meet everyone’s first choice.
