Bowmoor Optimist Flotilla

The 2018 sailing season has arrived – hurrah!  We have put together a youth coaching programme for this year drawing on the most popular activity from recent years whilst trying to build-in some new events with an emphasis on having sailing fun at Bowmoor!

The club calendar is busier than ever, and we have carefully selected our coaching dates to optimise time on the water and balance youth activity with general Bowmoor activity.

This year for both coaching Saturdays and Camp we are aiming to run Optibat, Optimist, Single hander and maybe Feva coaching groups all numbers dependant and as per your requirements. The Byte fleet will continue to organise coaching days independent of the dates given below.

Saturday Coaching dates for all youth sailors who are RYA post level two will be,

April 21st
April 28th
May 5th
May 19th

The Optibat group is for those who have recently completed their RYA level 2 and who do not own their own boat yet. The brilliant news is that over the winter we have purchased 8 brand new Optibats for these sailors making this a fantastic year to start sailing. Maybe you could you be the first to use one?

We will also run an improver Optimist group for those who have their own boat and who are either working towards or have just begun to club race and an advanced Optimist group for those perfecting their skills.

For the Single handers and Fevas we will split as per demand, like the Optimists I am hoping to run different level groups to accommodate the needs of all the sailors.

There are club boats available to hire for most of these options. .

The Saturday coaching days will cost £25 per sailor per day for members and £30 per sailor per day for non-members. Each child is required to have a parent or guardian on site for the day. To keep the costs down we also ask that parents help out either ashore or afloat as needed, thank you.

This year all booking for all coaching will be via Bowmoor webcollect, we appreciate that this adds a layer of complexity to your admin but it simplifies ours and we are able to hold all the contact info and safeguarding details that we need safely via this system. Payments will also be collected this way. Thank you.

To participate in camp children will need to have attended at least two of the pre camp coaching Saturdays, if this isn’t possible please contact Rachael to discuss – thank you!

2018 Optimist and Youth Camp

Camp will again run over the May half term week, with sailors invited to arrive on the evening of Tuesday 29th May to participate in coaching on the 30st May, 31st May and 1st June.

We will run groups similar to the coaching Saturdays with an additional pirate group for younger siblings.

2018 Optimist Open and Yoo regatta

These racing events will follow camp and run on Saturday 2nd June.

Entrance fee £15 payable in cash on the day this includes Egg / Bacon sandwich on arrival and Cream Tea after sailing!

Main fleet and regatta fleets will have separate starts and there will be fantastic prizes for both events.

Briefing 10am, first warning signal not before 10.25am.

New starters

Families looking to start young sailors for their RYA initial training should look out for details of Club courses that will be held in the Easter holidays.  This is a great time of year to start as new sailors can then access all of the above events.

Other opportunities

There will be further coaching dates in the Autumn and we plan to re start the Sunday morning hour of power once the weather warms up, please look out for updates in Bowsprit.

Other club events

This year there are more events than ever planned at Bowmoor that the whole family can enjoy, these are all advertised on the club website and via the Bowsprit newsletter.

Finally, don’t miss the Friday night social sailing sessions these provide a good opportunity to quietly practice skills learnt from courses and coaching and are a great way to end the week.

Please drop me an email if you have any questions, I am happy to reply by email or call you back.

If you would like to join the Coaching team / AI team for any of the above dates please let me know – thank you.
